ISLAY & JURA DISTILLERY RIDE

17 th – 21 st JULY 2008

In 1996, a group of friends organised a charity ride around the distilleries on the Isle of Islay to raise money for local charities. A total of 65 miles were completed over 3 days.

By popular demand, it has been decided to organise another ride on Islay in 2008. Marina MacArthur from Ardrishaig and Susan Campbell from Islay are the ride organisers, both having been involved with and participated in the 1996 ride.

The charities being supported in 2008 are the Weipers Centre for Equine Welfare which is part of the University of Glasgow and, once again, as in 1996, the Islay and Jura Sick Children’s’ Fund.

In 2005 and 2006 Marina’s international endurance horse Djaman was treated by the staff at the Weipers Centre for a degenerative bone disease. Whilst sadly he did not recover from this, the treatment, care and attention he received from Prof. Christoph Lischer and his team was second to none. Marina has selected the Weipers Centre as one of the benefactors of this ride as a way of saying “thank you” to them. It is also hoped that some members of the Weipers team will be able to come and may even participate in the ride.

The Islay and Jura Sick Children’s’ Fund provides support in travel, accommodation and expenses for parents of children from Islay and Jura who have to go to the mainland to receive long-term hospital treatment. This can be an expensive and worrying time for parents, and the Fund helps alleviate some of these worries by providing practical financial help when it is most needed. Susan has chosen to support this charity again, having had first hand experience of being a parent in a remote island community.
